Sigma Series 4 vs Series 3 MAX and Pull: What Changed and Why
For many professional tile fixers, the Sigma Series 3 MAX and Pull cutters were the standard for years. They were strong, reliable and built to work day after day. Many are still in use today and continue to perform as well as the day they were bought.
The Series 4 did not replace a poor product. It was developed because Sigma listened carefully to the people using its cutters every day. Installers shared what they liked, what could be improved and where the small frustrations were. Sigma then redesigned the cutter around that feedback.
Here is what changed and why it matters.
The Series 3 MAX and Pull cutters
The Series 3 MAX was the push to score version, while the Pull was designed for installers who preferred to score towards themselves. Both were available in cutter sizes from 60cm to 155cm.
They were known for their strength. Sigma cutters have always been engineered for professional use and the Series 3 range earned a reputation for being almost bomb proof.
A common joke among Sigma owners is that they never need to change their scoring wheel. Sigma uses only a small selection of wheel sizes across the range, and many tilers have used the same wheel for five years or more. That is remarkable for a tool used every day on porcelain and ceramics.
The issue with different handle sizes?
The Series 3 MAX handle was push to score, but each cutter size needed the correct handle to fit its centre rail.
For example, a 62cm 3B4M cutter used a centre bar that required a 10mm handle gap. A 127cm 3E4M cutter needed a handle with a 15mm gap.
This meant there were many different handle codes. If a customer needed a replacement handle, they could not simply order one. They first needed to know the correct centre rail thickness for their particular cutter.
It could be confusing for end users and even experienced installers sometimes needed to check before ordering.
Metal on metal movement
The Series 3 handles used aluminium running directly on a steel rail. This worked very well, but like any metal on metal system, it needed regular cleaning and silicone spray to keep it moving smoothly.
It was a dependable setup, but Sigma knew there was a way to make the handle easier to live with over time.
Scoring line visibility
Both the MAX and Pull handle designs had limited visibility of the scoring wheel and pencil marks.
Some installers were perfectly comfortable with this, especially those who had used Sigma cutters for years. Others wanted a clearer view from the handle position so they could see the scoring wheel meet their pencil mark more easily.
That feedback became an important part of the Series 4 design.
The older base design
Smaller Series 3 cutters used a one piece aluminium base. Larger cutters needed a joined base with extra reinforcement to keep the machine strong.
This made the larger cutters heavier.
Both ends of the cutter were also height adjustable, allowing users to set the cutting depth for different tile thicknesses. It was a useful feature, but some installers were unsure what setting they should use for everyday tiling.
The Series 4 response
Sigma redesigned the Series 4 range to make the cutter simpler, lighter and easier to use straight from the box.
The goal was clear. Give installers the precision and strength Sigma is known for, while removing unnecessary adjustment and confusion.
One handle across the range
The Series 4 handle uses self adjusting internal cartridges with half round bearings.
This means one handle fits every cutter size in the range. The handle automatically adapts to the centre rail, removing the need to identify a specific handle gap or rail thickness before ordering a replacement.
It is a much simpler system for installers, retailers and end users.
Direct view of the scoring wheel
The Series 4 NEX gives installers a direct view of the scoring wheel.
This makes it easier to see the wheel meet pencil marks from point to point, particularly when working with detailed cuts, larger tiles or repeated accurate work.
The NEX remains push to score, while the Series 4 UP is available for installers who prefer to pull the handle towards them.
A larger breaking foot
The Series 4 has a 150mm breaking foot with no mark protectors.
It gives wide, controlled support when snapping the tile while helping protect the surface from unwanted marks.
Self adjusting to tile thickness
With Series 4, the handle automatically adjusts to the thickness of the tile.
There is no need to decide which depth setting to use for normal everyday tiling. Place the tile on the cutter, score it and break it.
A stronger, lighter one piece base
Every size in the Series 4 range uses a one piece aluminium base.
This gives the cutter excellent strength while keeping the larger models lighter and easier to handle than the reinforced joined base used on older long cutters.
For installers moving a 125cm or 155cm cutter around site, that difference matters.
New scoring wheel and reduced handle wear
The Series 4 uses a 16mm scoring wheel with a brass anti friction plate.
This helps reduce wear in the handle while keeping the scoring action smooth and controlled.
Sigma wheels are well known for their longevity, and the Series 4 continues that reputation.
Laser ready for larger cutters
Series 4 cutters can also be fitted with a built in laser. This projects a green line down the centre of the base and is especially useful on larger 125cm and 155cm cutters.
It gives installers another clear visual reference when working with long tiles.
Designed by Sigma engineers
Sigma has always designed and manufactured its products in house. The Series 4 is not a collection of external ideas added to a cutter. It is the result of Sigma engineers taking feedback from professional installers around the world and improving the product around how people actually work.
Built to last
Every Series 4 cutter comes with a five year warranty.
Sigma UK has been established for nearly 15 years and has never received a warranty claim. That is not an accident. It reflects the quality, engineering and long term durability Sigma products are known for.
The Series 3 MAX and Pull cutters remain respected tools that many professionals still use with confidence. The Series 4 takes that same dependable Sigma foundation and makes it simpler, lighter and more intuitive for today’s installer.
